We understand the challenges of having limited personal interactions in a virtual environment. Therefore, as a supplement to your application materials, we would like to provide you the opportunity to submit an optional personal statement to share any additional information about yourself and/or your application.  This statement should be limited to 500 words or fewer and can be submitted to us either on the date of, or prior to your call back interview.  You may provide a statement on any topic that is meaningful to you, but topics you might consider discussing include an experience or interest that has shaped your identity or an experience or interest that has contributed to your decision to pursue your career path.  If you have already provided us with a personal statement through a prior application, you may elect to have that statement included as part of your file in lieu of submitting a new one or you are welcome to send us an updated version.

New York 1L Diversity Summer Associate Program

As a summer associate at Cleary Gottlieb, you will have a unique, immersive experience tailored to your individual interests. You will collaborate with our lawyers on a diverse and exciting range of matters, create meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients, and contribute to our world class practice.

Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. Students who have overcome obstacles in pursuing a legal education, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those from populations historically underrepresented in the legal profession are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2023 and must be able to participate in Cleary Gottlieb’s 2021 Summer Associate Program for a minimum of 8 weeks. After completion of a successful summer program, 1L Summer Associates will be eligible to receive an offer to return to the firm as summer associates in 2022.

Mid-Level Associate - Debt Finance

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire an associate for our Debt Finance Practice. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of relevant work experience, the ability to manage complex borrower-side financing lending transactions for high grade and/or leveraged borrowers, as well as excellent credentials.


Mid-Level Associate - M&A

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a stellar mid-level associate for our Mergers & Acquisitions practice, focusing on acquisitions, divestitures, mergers and joint ventures, private equity funds, and financial institutions. Candidates should have experience as a lead associate managing transactions and drafting definitive agreements as well as knowledge handling all other aspects of a transaction.  The ideal candidate should have a minimum 3 years of M&A experience, be admitted to the New York Bar, and have excellent credentials. 


Mid-Level Associate - Tax

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire an associate for our Tax Practice. The ideal candidate will have 4 or more years of relevant work experience with significant transactional experience including M&A and Private Equity tax work, as well as excellent credentials.


Staff Attorney - Private Clients

Lawyers in the firm’s private clients practice appreciate our clients’ complex and highly personalized needs. We help our clients protect and administer family wealth and plan for the transmission of wealth to family members and charities. The firm prides itself on the ability to provide sophisticated but practical tax advice integrated into sensitive, confidential estate plans reflective of our clients’ family, charitable and business objectives.

Job Responsibilities: Estate and trust administration and basic estate planning - including the preparation of probate and administration proceeding papers, estate administration including  collection and valuation of assets, payment of debts and bequests, preparation and filing of federal and state estate tax returns, preparation of informal estate and trust accountings, administration of ongoing trusts, including distribution requests, income tax payments, review of Form 1041’s prepared by outside accountants, preparation of receipt and release agreements, fiduciary appointments and tax planning, preparation of basic estate planning documents such as wills and trusts.  As the candidate’s experience grows the responsibilities of the job will also expand.

Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have 5 or more years of trusts and estates experience and be comfortable with using math and excel. Must have a  J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and be admitted to the New York Bar.
