2023 New York Summer Associate - Cleary Interview Program (CIP)

Cleary Gottlieb is pleased to solicit applications for our 2023 Summer Associate positions in the New York office through the Cleary Interview Program (CIP).

As a summer associate at Cleary Gottlieb, you will have a unique, immersive experience while working on a diverse and exciting range of matters, including innovative deals, large corporate transactions, and high-profile litigation matters. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with our lawyers, create meaningful relationships with colleagues, and be part of our world class and international practice.

Candidates who are interested in applying to our Cleary Interview Program (CIP) in New York and/or Washington, D.C. may submit an application through our online portal. CIP permits students who have a strong interest in Cleary Gottlieb to participate in an accelerated application process.

Application Procedure:

  • Applications will be accepted as of Wednesday, June 1, 2022 through Friday, July 1, 2022.
  • Candidates should have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2024 and must be able to participate in Cleary Gottlieb’s 2023 Summer Associate Program for a minimum of 7 weeks.
  • Selected candidates will receive an invitation to interview no later than Friday, July 8, 2022.
  • Selected candidates who receive an offer will be given 14 days to respond.
  • Offers must be accepted or declined within 14 days. Extensions will not be granted.
  • Candidates who attend law schools where early interviewing is prohibited should abide by their law school guidelines and only apply through their law school interview process

  • Law school transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable and second semester grades should be provided as a supplement if not available when application is submitted)
  • Undergraduate transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable)

Entry Level Associate - Tax

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire third year law students graduating in 2023 for first year associate positions in our Tax practice group. Law firm and transactional experience is a plus, but not a requirement. The ideal candidate will have excellent credentials and will sit for the New York State bar.

Junior and Mid-Level Associates - Antitrust

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire junior and mid-level associates for our Antitrust practice. The ideal candidate will have 1-4 years of experience in pre-merger notification and civil and/or criminal antitrust litigation, as well as excellent credentials. Candidates will be considered for the Washington, DC and Bay Area offices.


Junior and Mid-Level Associates - Structured Finance

The Washington office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire junior and mid-level associates for our Structured Finance practice. The ideal candidate will have 1-4 years of CLO and/or REMIC experience, as well as excellent credentials.

Junior-Level Associate - Tax

The San Francisco office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire an associate for our Tax Practice. The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of relevant work experience with significant transactional experience including M&A and Private Equity tax work, as well as excellent credentials and California bar admission.

Junior-Level or Mid-Level Associate - M&A

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a stellar junior or mid-level associate for our Mergers & Acquisitions practice, focusing on acquisitions, divestitures, mergers and joint ventures, private equity funds, and financial institutions. Candidates should have experience as a lead associate managing transactions and drafting definitive agreements as well as knowledge handling all other aspects of a transaction.  The ideal candidate should have 1-4 years of M&A experience, be admitted to the California Bar, and have excellent credentials. Candidates will be considered for Palo Alto or San Francisco. 

Mid-Level Associate - Derivatives Practice

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a mid-level associate for our Capital Markets group, Derivatives Practice. Candidates should have relevant work experience in derivatives transactions, including, but not limited to, equity derivatives, convertible notes, margin loans, Cryptocurrency, and securities-backed credit facilities. Experience representing financial institutions, private funds, and other derivative end users on issues relating to securities and derivatives regulations is preferred. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of derivatives transactions experience, be admitted to the New York Bar, and have excellent credentials. 

Mid-Level Associate - Executive Compensation & ERISA

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a stellar mid-level associate for our Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits practice.  The ideal candidate will have a diversified executive compensation and benefits practice with experience advising both private and public companies, as well as alternative asset managers, on executive compensation matters, including supporting M&A, corporate governance and capital markets matters. Candidates should have 3-5 years of executive compensation and employee benefits experience, and be admitted to the New York Bar with excellent credentials. 

Mid-Level Associate - Private Funds

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a mid-level associate for our Private Funds Practice.  The practice is one of the most well-regarded funds practices in the world, including being recognized as a leading firm by industry publications such as Chambers, Legal 500 and Law360, and its rapid but steady growth provides significant opportunities for associates to grow within the firm.  The group represents a broad range of clients, including some of the most elite and sophisticated GPs and LPs as well as mid-market firms, entrepreneurs and other new entrants in the field.  The practice is involved in all aspects of private funds, including fundraising, co-investments, secondary transactions, and other fund-related matters, providing associates with a well-rounded experience and strong foundations for future success.  In addition to its reputation, strong client base and diverse practice, the group is warm and welcoming, with a focus on culture, collegiality and associate well-being.  The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience representing Private Fund sponsors and LPs in fund formation as well as excellent credentials and be admitted to practice in the state of New York.

Senior Associate – Private Clients Practice

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to add a senior associate to its growing and highly successful Private Clients group. Lawyers in the Private Clients practice act as “general counsel” to high net worth clients and advise on a full range of matters, including:

  • Estate, gift and income tax planning
  • Cross-border and international planning
  • Administration of trusts and estates
  • Closely-held businesses and succession planning
  • Matrimonial matters
  • Private investments
  • Transactions and planning  involving residential real estate and luxury items, including art, boats and aircrafts
  • Charitable planning

Lawyers in the Private Clients group work collaboratively with other practice groups in the firm in Cleary’s network of 16 offices on four continents.  The ideal candidate will have superior client skills and a desire for advancement with at least 7 or more years of experience serving high net worth individuals, be admitted to the New York Bar, and have excellent credentials.  Additional bar admissions in Florida, New Jersey and Connecticut and an LLM in Taxation is a plus but not a requirement.


Senior Associate/Attorney – CFIUS and Sanctions Practice

The Washington office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking a stellar senior level associate/attorney for its growing CFIUS and sanctions practice. The ideal candidate will have experience preparing CFIUS notices and running CFIUS processes, as well as experience with non-U.S. foreign direct investment regimes, economic sanctions, and export controls. Candidates with a diverse background and experience in international trade and national security matters is a plus.  Candidates should have a minimum of 6-8 years of relevant experience, and be admitted to the New York or D.C. Bar along with excellent credentials.

Senior Staff Attorney – Tax Practice

The New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP is seeking to hire a senior staff attorney for our Tax Practice. The ideal candidate will have 4 or more years of relevant work experience with significant transactional experience including tax work in M&A, private equity, capital markets and debt finance.  Specific experience in REMICs, collateralized loan obligations, fund conduits, equity disclosure including PFIC analyses, LP Transfers and sub document review for funds is preferred, but experience in all of these is not required.  The ideal candidate will be licensed to practice in New York, possess superior organizational skills and have excellent credentials.
